Who We Are
The Friends of the Cathedral is a group composed of women and men who are lay supporters and volunteers. Founded in 1908 and known until recently as The Laymen's Club, we have been an integral part of the life of our great church. For many years, The Friends was the organizing body of the lay volunteers who served as ushers and tour guides. Countless lay women and men have used The Friends as a way to give their time and resources to further the Cathedral’s mission.
Thanks to decades of fundraisers, estate gifts, dues and donations, and the prudent management of our funds, we have provided significant financial support both to programming and to a wide variety of “bricks and mortar” projects at the Cathedral. Today one would be hard-pressed to find a corner of the building that does not bear The Friends’ fingerprints. Our recent contributions include:
- Providing funds for many projects and initiatives around the Cathedral
- Supporting the music program, including the Organ Scholar
- Supporting the Cathedral's many social services
- Sponsoring gatherings and social events in and around the Cathedral
Membership
The Friends of the Cathedral offer individuals a way to become part of a fellowship of people who believe in the Cathedral and its future. Beyond just donating financially, it offers direct participation with other lay people in the growth and preservation of this remarkable world treasure. Rather than being a spectator, it offers the hands-on opportunity to live out our values.
