Conflict, climate change, and natural disasters have displaced an unprecedented number of people in recent years. Many of these people are women of reproductive age, one in five of whom is likely to be pregnant. In Latin America and the Caribbean, mass migration out of Venezuela and displacement of Puerto Ricans impacted by Hurricane Maria have left women and girls bearing the brunt of the disasters. Crisis settings put women and girls at higher risk of rape and sexual violence, unsafe abortions, and maternal mortality. The International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) works with local partners throughout the Americas and Caribbean to provide healthcare and address the unique physical and psychological needs of women and girls on the move. This panel discussion will focus on the current situations in Puerto Rico and Venezuela and the tireless work of IPPF/WHR’s partners to provide care beyond borders.

This program is presented in conjunction with The Value of Sanctuary: Building a House Without Walls, on view in the Cathedral through June 30.
