Core elements

Time

Time set apart puts God at the center in a unique way, inviting God into our questions, our need for healing, and our desires to serve the world.

Prayer and discernment

Formation in prayer and discernment in the tradition of St. Ignatius equips us in more efficient decision-making and sharpens our ability to respond to the signs of the times.

Community life

A rhythm of deeply-shared community life provides the conditions to build lasting relationships that will model unity in diversity.

Different backgrounds

Learning from and with Christians from different churches and backgrounds trains us to grow in understanding rather than simple acquisition of information, love rather than awareness, and enables us to engage in healthy dialogue and disagreement.

New York City

Living in a fascinating and evolving neighborhood in the heart of the most exciting city in the world gives a unique backdrop to incarnate our human flourishing, all while heightening awareness of contemporary social problems.

Belonging

There are two ways of belonging to the Community at the Crossing.

  • Local membership is part-time, open to 21-33 year olds.
  • Residential membership is full-time, open to 21-30 year olds.

Local and Residential members make up one community. They meet together regularly.

Why be a member?

Cascading transformations

This year is an opportunity to establish relationships that will lead to transformational thinking about difference. Relationships take time and effort. In community, we commit to one another with Jesus as our center of unity. Through commitment, we give one another the gift of time and are the privileged first witnesses of the transformational impact of God's presence in our lives. In sharing life with one another in the heart of New York, we receive a heightened awareness of contemporary social problems; we both learn skills for providing practical care to people in need and gain experience in applying Christian ethical principles to business and to social issues.

Do dialogue and reconciliation differently

Christianity in the US is deeply divided. We need space and time to practice and experience how to do faith and live relationships differently. We need safe and stretching spaces to be centered on Christ. From there, we can seek and practice true dialogue and authentic reconciliation. As a community, we choose the humility of daily life as our common bedrock, seeking relationship and not just information. In this way, we can rediscover what church and community can be. We can experience Christian community as a path back to belonging to and trusting the Church.

Exemplify Christ-centred faith rooted in local community

Loneliness and anxiety rates are alarmingly high, in our society. Meanwhile, the church and other establishments where community might be found have largely lost the trust of younger Christians. In a world that believes in the individual, we believe that the Gospel can renew our communities. In a culture that favors efficiency, we choose relationship. In our coming together in prayer and action with members of the intergenerational Church, we witness to hope and point to something greater than ourselves.
